Urgent Eye Care from a Specialist Optometrist

When something is wrong with your eyes, you need answers quickly from someone with the right expertise and equipment. Justine offers emergency eye appointments for sudden or worrying eye problems, from red, painful eyes to new flashes and floaters. As a specialist optometrist and independent prescriber who also works in hospital practice, she can examine, diagnose and treat many urgent eye conditions in one visit. Unless you have a serious eye injury, Justine should be your first call for sudden eye problems rather than your GP.

Why Call an Optometrist Before Your GP?

GPs are experts in general health, but many surgeries do not have the specialist equipment needed to examine the eye in detail. This can mean being referred elsewhere, adding delay and worry.

Justine’s practice has hospital-standard equipment, including a slit lamp microscope, OCT and Optomap imaging, so she can look closely at the front and back of the eye. As an independent prescriber, she can also issue a private prescription if medication is needed, giving you diagnosis and treatment from one experienced clinician in a single appointment.

Eye Problems Justine Can Help With

Emergency appointments cover new flashing lights or a sudden increase in floaters, red or painful eyes and eyelids, and recent or sudden loss of vision. New flashes and floaters can signal a retinal tear or detachment, so prompt assessment matters.

Justine can also help with something stuck in the eye, dry and gritty eyes, and eyes that are irritated, watery or sticky. If you have a different symptom or a sudden change that worries you, call Justine first and she will advise whether you need to be seen.

What Happens at Your Emergency Appointment

Your emergency appointment includes all the tests needed to find the cause of your symptoms, including dilation if required. Justine will ask about what you have noticed, then examine your eyes closely using her slit lamp microscope and imaging equipment where appropriate.

She will explain what she finds in clear, simple terms. If treatment is needed, she can issue a private prescription there and then. Where a condition needs hospital care, Justine will arrange the right referral, so you know exactly what happens next.

Book an Emergency Eye Appointment

Justine Proctor Optometrist is a private practice and does not offer NHS appointments. Some situations need hospital care straight away. For chemical splashes, rinse the eye with plenty of clean water and go to A&E. Go to A&E for a serious eye injury, and call 999 if sudden vision loss comes with signs of stroke, such as facial weakness or slurred speech. For any other sudden eye problem, call Justine and she will advise how quickly you need to be seen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I see an optometrist or my GP for an eye problem?

For most sudden eye problems, an optometrist is the better first port of call. Justine has specialist equipment to examine the eye in detail, and as an independent prescriber she can issue a private prescription if needed. Go to A&E for serious injuries or chemical splashes.

What counts as an eye emergency?

Sudden symptoms such as new flashes or floaters, red or painful eyes, sudden loss of vision, something stuck in the eye, or sticky, watery and irritated eyes all need prompt assessment. If you are unsure, call Justine on 07701281081 for advice.

Can Justine prescribe eye drops or medication?

Yes. Justine is an independent prescriber, so she can issue private prescriptions to treat many acute and emergency eye conditions, such as eye infections and inflammation, without you needing a separate GP appointment.

When should I go to A&E instead?

Go to A&E for chemical splashes, after rinsing the eye well with clean water, and for serious eye injuries such as a penetrating injury or a heavy blow to the eye. Call 999 if sudden vision loss comes with signs of a stroke, such as facial weakness or slurred speech.

Are new flashes and floaters an emergency?

Yes, they should be checked promptly. New flashing lights or a sudden increase in floaters can signal a retinal tear or detachment. Justine will dilate your pupils and examine your retina in detail, then arrange an urgent hospital referral if needed.
